Nihon Kohden is pleased to announce that cumulative worldwide shipments of its cardiolife automated external defibrillators (AEDs) reached one million units in October 2026.
Nihon Kohden started its AED business in 2002 ahead of Japan’s approval of AED use by the general public in 2004. The Company has steadily expanded its product lineup and services, including the launch of Japan’s first domestically produced AED in 2009, the introduction of its AED Linkage*1 service in 2011, the launch of Japan’s first domestically produced AED for home use in 2018, and the launch of Japan’s first domestically produced fully automatic AED in 2022. Nihon Kohden has also contributed to promoting the wider use of AEDs and improving survival rates by conducting AED training sessions both in Japan and overseas. Its other initiatives include supporting the Tokyo Marathon, which was first held in 2007, and Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, as well as supervising the development of supplementary educational materials for children’s magazines.
To celebrate this major milestone, Nihon Kohden will run a one-year campaign through September 2027 under the slogan “Courage for more tomorrows,” aiming to strengthen its brand and further develop its AED business.
“Reaching one million units is more than a shipment milestone. It reflects the journey of our AED business, which we have built together with so many people who share our commitment to saving lives,” said Tsutomu Wakabayashi, Operating Officer, Deputy General Manager of Technology Development Operations, Senior Manager of Emergency Resuscitation Technology Development Division. “We see our AEDs as an integral part of the communities they serve. Behind this milestone are the everyday lives of people in those communities. This achievement marks a new beginning. By listening to those on the front lines of emergency medical care, we aim to bring greater peace of mind to communities and help save more lives.”

Cumulative Worldwide AED Shipments

*1  AED Linkage (AED Remote Monitoring System) helps support daily maintenance by notifying customers of issues with the AED, or the expiration of the AED’s electrode pads and batteries, using an email generated based on information gathered from a self-test performed by the AED unit and sent to a server via a remote monitoring terminal.
*2  PAD (Public Access Defibrillation) markets include public facilities, schools, and private companies.
